A PLACE-NAME NEEDS A TRACE

Amethyst is purple quartz. The seller’s “Bahia” label is a provenance claim to retain and verify, not something colour proves. Natural faces, worked surfaces and repairs need their own observations. A good story does not fill its gaps with certainty.

BRAZIL / FIELDWORK, 1987

David Stanley Epstein’s Winter 1988 Gems & Gemology report describes visits to Marabá, Pau d’Arco and Rio Grande do Sul. Veins, alluvium and basalt geodes called for different mining methods. He credited miners, dealers and geologists alongside his own observations. Those study areas do not establish a Bahia origin for this lot.

RECEIVED. OBSERVED. VERIFIED.

Keep the seller’s exact wording. Add a date and one detail you can see.

Leave the origin line open until there is evidence. When you give the piece, give that record with it—and keep the people in its story.

CARE CONTINUES

Support the whole piece and protect the tip. Avoid steam, abrupt heat and prolonged intense light. Use a soft dry brush while matrix and repairs are unknown.
